Stay, renovate... or move?

As the years roll on and age creeps up on us we get more focused on adding life to our years and less on trimming the hedges. But as we age so does the home we live in and one day it dawns on us that this yard is becoming more and more to manage, or these stairs require a lot more effort than they once did.

And suddenly the question becomes... should I move?

Over the span of my career I have one very clear answer...

It depends.

I know that probably isn't what people expect to hear from a REALTOR®, but the reality is that sometimes the best decision is to stay exactly where you are.

Sometimes a thoughtful renovation can give you another 10 or 20 years in a home you already love, and sometimes moving is the option that opens the door to a simpler, more enjoyable lifestyle.

The key is understanding why you're considering a change in the first place.

Is your home becoming difficult to maintain?
Do you wish you were closer to family or friends?
Are those darn stairs actually getting steeper??

Every home has the potential to be adapted, and every move comes with its own opportunities and challenges.

I think discovering the answer to 'What kind of life do I want my home to support?' clears the path to clarity.
And don't get me wrong, it's not an easy path. Our homes are filled with memories and a sense of pride and independence. In a way our homes are extensions of who we are.

So weigh out the options...
Stay
Renovate.
Move.

They're all different ways of creating a home that works for the life you want to live.

What's one thing you'd change about your current home to make it suit your lifestyle better?

Sometimes the answer to that question tells us far more than whether it's time to move.
