There comes a point in life when the question becomes "Will this home support the life I want to live next?"Personally, for me, it’s hard to imagine thinking about this at such a young age (c’mon 50’s are still young!!). We Gen Xers are so wrapped up around work, family, aging parents, grandchildren, travel plans, hobbies, relationships, health goals etc etc. that the future feels so far away, until suddenly it doesn't.
As a REALTOR®, I've learned that the people who make the best housing decisions are the ones who plan before they need to. I both envy and admire these people!
They ask questions like:
If I wanted to stay here for another 20 years, could I?
Would my home still work if climbing stairs became difficult?
Am I close enough to the people and services that matter most?
Is maintaining this property bringing me joy or creating stress?
Does this home support the lifestyle I want today, not the one I had 15 years ago?
These aren't "senior" questions, they're life questions.
For some people, the ideal future means staying exactly where they are. For others, it means moving closer to family, community, healthcare, or simply a lifestyle that feels lighter and more aligned.
Sometimes the goal isn't to move, but instead to be aware of options because options create freedom.
And isn’t that what we’re all ultimately seeking?!
I can tell you from both personal experience and working with many clients throughout my career that the most successful transitions aren’t made during a crisis, they were made ahead of the curve with intention.
So here's a question I'd invite you to consider:
If you were designing your life for the next 20 years, would your current home still be part of the plan?
There isn't a right or wrong answer, but if it's a conversation you've been meaning to have, I'd be honoured to have it with you.
